Israel Embassy in Asunción Reopens
Israel reopened its embassy in Asunción, Paraguay on Wednesday after being closed for six years, marking a significant step in diplomatic relations between the two nations. The ceremony saw the attendance of President Santiago Peña, Foreign Minister Ruben Ramírez Lezcano, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, and Israel's Ambassador to Uruguay and Paraguay, Yoed Magen.
President Peña emphasized the strength of the relationship between Paraguay and Israel, calling the reopening a "firm step towards a future full of opportunities." He reaffirmed that Paraguay's diplomatic mission in Israel would be relocated back to Jerusalem by December of this year.
Amir Ohana highlighted the 76 years of bilateral ties between the two countries, acknowledging the efforts that led to the reopening of Israel's diplomatic mission in Paraguay, which will be housed in the World Trade Center (WTC) building in Asunción.
During the event, a tribute was made to David and Orly Schvartzman, a Paraguayan couple killed during the Hamas raid on October 8, 2023, in Israel. Additionally, a mezuzah, a symbol of Jewish faith, was placed at the embassy's entrance, brought from the home of another couple who were victims of the same attack.
