ISTSat-1: Portuguese University Nanosatellite Successfully Launched into Orbit
On July 9, a significant milestone was achieved for Portuguese space exploration as ISTSat-1, the first nanosatellite entirely built by researchers and students at Instituto Superior Técnico (Técnico), was launched into orbit aboard the European Space Agency’s Ariane 6 launch vehicle. The launch took place at the Kourou Space Center in French Guiana, marking a historic moment for Portugal’s academic and aerospace communities.
Ariane 6 successfully took off on July 9, carrying ISTSat-1 to an altitude of 580 kilometers, where it will orbit the Earth. The satellite was designed, built, and tested by the IST NanoSat Lab at Técnico, involving over 50 professors, researchers, and students.
The primary objective of ISTSat-1 is to monitor aircraft in remote and hard-to-detect areas, enhancing global air traffic surveillance. The satellite’s activity and data are being monitored by the Técnico team from their ground station in Oeiras.
An event celebrating the Ariane 6 liftoff was held at the Oeiras campus, attended by notable figures including: Fernando Alexandre, Portuguese Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation, Luís Ferreira, Rector of Universidade de Lisboa, Isaltino Morais, Mayor of Oeiras and Rogério Colaço, President of Técnico.
Rogério Colaço expressed pride and excitement, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the Técnico team in overcoming challenges to meet ESA’s stringent requirements. He highlighted the launch as a pivotal moment in Portugal’s aerospace development.
Luís Ferreira praised Técnico for its innovative spirit and significant contributions to technological advancements. He emphasized the university's role in solving global problems and improving lives through scientific achievements.
The successful launch of ISTSat-1 symbolizes Portugal's growing capabilities in the aerospace sector and its commitment to participating in the global space race.
This achievement is expected to pave the way for more ambitious projects, enhancing Portugal's presence in space technology and research.
The ISTSat-1 project represents a landmark achievement for Técnico and Portugal, showcasing the nation's potential in space exploration and technological innovation. The collaboration and dedication of the Técnico team have set a strong foundation for future endeavors in the aerospace field.
