Jaël Malli courageously discusses her experience of sexual assault
Jaël Malli underwent a distressing incident two decades ago when she became a victim of sexual assault. She fearlessly took to Instagram to share her story, acknowledging her own self-blame that persisted for a significant period.
Two decades ago, Jaël Malli fell victim to a horrific act of sexual assault. In light of the recent approval of the "No means no" provision in the reform of sexual criminal law by the National Council, the singer now finds solace in openly discussing the events on her Instagram platform.
It took her a lengthy span of 20 years to grant herself forgiveness for believing she was partially responsible for the sexual assault. Additionally, she came to realize that she experienced a state of shock commonly known as freezing, which hindered her ability to vocally express her refusal. Victims of sexualized violence often find themselves unable to react due to the overwhelming shock they experience. Malli writes, "For a long time, I questioned why I didn't react differently, why I couldn't clearly communicate my lack of consent or physically resist."
It is nearly impossible for those who have never been in such a harrowing situation to grasp the intricacies of the victim's emotions and the subsequent contemplation that follows. The weight of feeling "complicit" burdens the individual significantly, compounding the struggle of processing the violation of both physical and psychological boundaries, explains the former Lunik singer. Only with time did she truly comprehend the gravity of what had transpired. "Soon after, panic attacks began plaguing my life," she reveals.
Malli emphasizes that the reactions of her body varied from what is typically depicted in movies or popular culture. "There exists not only the scenario where the victim thrashes and screams, but also a silent form of terror and fear, especially when the assailant is someone known to you," she highlights.
With the implementation of the new provision, courts will be equipped to recognize such states of shock as clear rejections in the future. Malli expresses her gratitude for this progress in her post. Finally, she offers her well wishes to her followers, stating, "I extend strength to all those who understand the depth of my words and have gone through similar experiences."
