Meet Rayo, the rising artist bringing the heart of Congo to the world

Moise Kpete, renowned by his captivating stage persona Rayo, has emerged as a prominent figure in the music industry, amassing a following with his innovative musical prowess. Hailing from the culturally affluent lands of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rayo has crafted an unmistakable style that harmoniously blends traditional Congolese rhythms with a contemporary sonic tapestry. Beyond mere entertainment, Rayo's music transcends boundaries, serving as a profound cultural experience that fervently conveys the soul of Congo to the farthest corners of the world.

Born in the vibrant city of Goma in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rayo was immersed in a musical environment that shaped his artistic journey. Surrounded by the incredible influence of his mother, Rayo's songs inevitably revolve around the essence of women. Having been blessed with immense love during his formative years, he expresses that affection through his heartfelt compositions. With the power of his voice, he has the ability to touch hearts in moments of both sorrow and elation, resonating with his melodious creations.

In 2015, Rayo's life took a fortunate turn when he joined Nation Rouge, a rap group formed during his college years. However, as time passed, each member of the group felt called by fate to pursue individual paths. Rayo, on the other hand, remained steadfast in his pursuit of a music career. Fortunately, destiny would bring him back together with one of his former group members, who would become his manager. This reunion sparked a renewed sense of purpose, propelling Rayo to dedicate himself entirely to his craft, delving into the realms of songwriting and singing. During this period, he refrained from rushing any musical releases, choosing instead to refine his artistry.

Towards the end of 2022, a significant turning point in Rayo's journey arrived when he signed a contract with KSound, a renowned production and talent management company based in his beloved hometown. The culmination of this partnership is none other than his latest single, 'Aliyah,' an enchanting composition that seamlessly combines Rayo's commanding and ethereal vocals with lyrics that evoke deep affection.

Rayo's ascent in the music industry showcases not only his innate talent but also his unwavering commitment to his art. With each release, Rayo solidifies his position as a compelling artist who leaves an indelible imprint on the hearts and souls of those who listen. In the wake of his latest single release, HUNGER had the opportunity to delve into the world of Rayo, exploring his musical journey and his unmatched love for Congolese culture.

As a rising star in the music world, could you take us on your journey into music? Was music always the path you wanted to pursue, or did you discover your passion for it along the way?

I began singing when I was young, within the confines of a church. I was born into a family where music permeated our lives - my grandmother and mother had the gift of song. This love and passion for music were passed down to me from them. That's why I chose to pursue music. I started my professional journey in 2019 as part of a boy band with two other talented individuals. My first solo single, titled 'Mwambiye,' was released in 2019. Since then, I've been performing at shows, writing music, and most recently, I signed with K-Sound. 'Aliyah' marks my first release under the label.

Before consciously deciding to pursue music, who were some of the artists that influenced you and kept you inspired?

My favorite artist is James Arthur, but when it comes to French artists, I admire Ya Levis and Hero. Meeting Ya Levis was a significant milestone for me. When he listened to my music and complimented its quality, it instilled a belief in myself and my ability to pursue music. It was the push I needed to embark on this professional journey. Fally Ipupa is also an icon in my country, and his music is a part of all of us. He has successfully promoted our style of music, rumba. Fally has been a source of inspiration for me since I was young, and he continues to inspire me to this day.

Speaking of collaborating with other artists, which musicians are at the top of your list to work with in the future?

At the top of my list would be Hiro. I remember listening to his music when I was ten years old, and his songs still resonate with me to this day. He is a legend in love music, which aligns with the style I pursue now. Additionally, I would love to work with Fally Ipupa.

Your latest single, 'Aliyah,' is currently enjoying great commercial success. How does it feel to witness your music connect with audiences and gain recognition in the industry?

I am incredibly proud of myself, and it reinforces my belief that I can achieve great things in this field. It has also boosted my confidence and motivated me to strive for even better results in the future.

Your music incorporates a range of genres, including afrobeats, rumba, and soukous, while remaining deeply rooted in Congolese culture. How do you blend these sounds together and make them your own?

There are numerous music styles available, and my goal is to be authentic while keeping our culture alive. I am a passionate lover of Afrobeats, and I want to experiment by combining it with our rumba, soukous, and other sounds to create something unique.

Could you provide some insight into the music scene in Congo and shed light on the challenges artists face while working there?

The music industry in Congo is no easy feat. Some people view Congolese music as the foundation of African music, which places a significant spotlight on us. People expect us to excel, and honestly, it is challenging. Your music can be loved today, and someone else can outshine you tomorrow. Sustaining that love is a constant challenge.

If you could change one aspect of the Congolese music scene, what would it be?

Simply put, established artists should support emerging talents more. We can observe the support younger artists receive from their older counterparts in places like Nigeria, and it has contributed to the growth of Nigerian music. We hope that more prominent artists in Congo can do the same for us. My motto has always been, "I rise, we rise." If I achieve success, I should be able to help others grow as well.

With your emergence on the music scene, how do you plan to elevate Congolese music's profile globally and put it on the map?

First and foremost, I aim to create exceptional music that can be appreciated anywhere. I call it "music without borders." People from all corners of the world should be able to listen, connect, and experience emotions without concerning themselves with its origin. Once we reach that level, we can make a real impact. That is my ultimate goal.

Looking ahead, what can fans anticipate next from Rayo, and where do you envision your music career taking you in the future?

As I mentioned earlier, my objective is to surpass my previous work with every release. We are currently working on the next project, which promises to be amazing and will undoubtedly surpass the success of 'Aliyah.' We also have more singles in the pipeline and plan to release an EP by the end of the year.
