Janine Niépce photo exhibition puts women’s work – and emancipation – in the spotlight
The new exhibition featuring the work of Janine Niépce, one of France's pioneering female photojournalists, shines a light on the rise of the working woman against the backdrop of the women's rights movement in the latter half of the twentieth century. Niépce's photographs, many of which are being displayed for the first time, document the struggles and triumphs of women as they navigated societal changes and fought for their rights.
When Niépce began her career in the early 1950s, she faced skepticism as a female photographer in a male-dominated field. Her determination and talent allowed her to capture the essence of women's lives, from factory workers to students, and to document significant moments in the women's rights movement. Her granddaughter, Hélène Jaeger Defaix, noted that Niépce's work was shaped by her observations of injustices faced by women, including voting rights and access to contraception.
Niépce's photography goes beyond the political; it also highlights the everyday lives of women. She captured moments of domesticity—women doing laundry, preparing meals, and caring for children—recognizing these activities as valuable work, even if unacknowledged. This perspective was unique at a time when many male photographers overlooked the significance of women's daily lives.
Through her lens, Niépce aimed to inspire women to pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men. She photographed women in various professions, including engineers, doctors, and architects, showcasing their contributions and encouraging future generations to break free from conventional roles. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for women's rights and the importance of recognizing women's contributions to society.
Both Sézane and Janine Niépce's exhibition reflect the essence of French culture—an appreciation for style, quality, and the celebration of women's roles in society. Sézane continues to embody the timeless elegance of Parisian fashion while expanding its global footprint, and Niépce's photographs serve as a poignant tribute to the women who fought for their rights and shaped the world around them. Together, they highlight the enduring impact of French creativity and the importance of women's empowerment in both fashion and society.
