Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Football Club has recently announced the appointment of Sergio Daniel Moniz Traguil as their new manager
KCCA FC has appointed Sergio Daniel Moniz Traguil, a Portuguese coach, as their new manager, replacing Jackson Mayanja, who has been serving as the interim coach since April. The club formally announced Traguil's appointment through its CEO Anisha Muhoozi on Monday. Traguil, who holds a UEFA A License and is currently pursuing a UEFA Pro License, has signed a two-year contract with the club.
The selection of Traguil puts an end to the speculation surrounding the potential return of former KCCA FC coaches like Mike Mutebi and Sam Simbwa. Traguil will assume his responsibilities on July 1, 2023. Sergio Moniz Traguil boasts an impressive coaching background, having managed various teams including Kaduna United in Nigeria, Hearts of Oak in Ghana, Singida Big Stars in Tanzania, Santa Rita, CD Lunda Sul, Kabuscorp in Angola, and Mriat SC in Oman, among others.
Traguil will be taking over from Jackson Mayanja, a former Cranes player who had been in charge of KCCA FC since April. Mayanja, appointed as the interim coach to rectify the team's performance, was unable to make significant improvements and eventually lost the league title to their rivals Vipers on the final matchday.
KCCA FC, who have gone three years without securing a league title, made notable signings at the start of the previous season with the intention of reclaiming their past glory. Initially, the team displayed promise and even held a six-point lead at the top of the table. However, their fortunes took a downturn when SC Villa surpassed them, marked by a series of three consecutive draws against Maroons, UPDF, and Blacks Power.
These results posed a substantial threat to their championship aspirations and resulted in the resignation of coach Morley Byekwaso. Despite Mayanja taking charge towards the end of the season, KCCA FC still struggled to improve their situation and narrowly missed out on the league title, finishing tied on 53 points but losing on goal difference.
With the appointment of Traguil, KCCA FC is optimistic about a successful future under his guidance. The club believes that Traguil's extensive expertise, commitment to excellence, and character will help them revive their former glory. Traguil's initial task will be leading KCCA FC in the CAF Confederations Cup, a continental competition for which the club qualified as runners-up in the domestic league.
This qualification served as consolation after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League. Muhoozi expressed confidence in Traguil, stating, "KCCA Football Club will greatly benefit from Sergio's extensive expertise, high standards of excellence, and character. He is a successful coach who has worked at the highest levels in different leagues on the continent but, most importantly, he aligns with the club's philosophy of playing beautiful football and fostering development."
