Zacapa gives Coatepeque a win to be crowned champion of the First Division
In an impressive display, CSD Zacapa orchestrated an extraordinary comeback, clinching the championship title in the premier division of Guatemalan soccer with a resounding 5-0 victory over Coatepeque.
Initially, things seemed bleak for the "roosters" as they suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first leg. However, Zacapa was no stranger to turning the tides, having demonstrated their resilience in the semifinals. They had overcome a daunting challenge against San Pedro, rebounding from a 4-0 loss in the first leg to secure their qualification in a thrilling penalty shootout.
Due to a sanction, the Sunday match was relocated from the David Ordóñez Bardales stadium to the Las Víctorias Stadium in Chiquimula, which served as the stage for Zacapa's remarkable achievement.
Zacapa wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Juan Escobar finding the net in the seventh minute. Just before the conclusion of the first half, Omar López extended the lead to 2-0, thereby equalizing the aggregate score.
In the 56th minute, Juan Escobar struck again, securing a 3-0 lead. Only ten minutes later, Frank Zamora added to the onslaught, making it 4-0. And to complete the spectacle, César Madrid sealed the victory with a flourish, netting the fifth goal and sending the ecstatic fans into a frenzy.
While CSD Zacapa had already secured promotion to the National League by virtue of reaching the final, ascending to the pinnacle of Guatemalan soccer as champions will undoubtedly be an additional cause for celebration among their loyal supporters.
