Kiwi band Zed returns with new album
Kiwi band Zed, known for defining the early-2000s New Zealand rock sound with hits like "Renegade Fighter" and "Glorafilla," have released their first album in 20 years, titled Future Memory. After reuniting in 2017 and playing regular shows, lead vocalist Nathan King told RNZ's Afternoons that creating new music felt like a natural progression.
"We're lucky in the band there's three of the four of us who write music," King said. "It's one of those things that's in your blood, and you don't necessarily ever give that up." He noted that the band's dynamic has mellowed since their early days. "I think we're all a lot more tolerant of each other and aware of ourselves. That self-awareness has become really apparent, making this reconnection so rewarding."
Zed's members are now spread across the country, with drummer Adrian Palmer in Christchurch, Ben Campbell in Akaroa, Andy Lynch in Matakana, and King in Auckland. This geographic spread has altered their songwriting process. King explained, "I might have gotten stuck with a verse or pre-chorus and spent weeks hammering away at it. Now, I can throw it to the other guys, and they often take it in unexpected directions. It’s refreshing."
Reflecting on how the music industry has changed since their early years, bassist Ben Campbell noted that it’s almost unrecognizable from when Zed first started out. The band's evolution, both in their interpersonal dynamics and in adapting to a transformed music landscape, marks a fresh chapter in their journey.
