Manal Benchlikha, singing her dreams
July 2, 2022 will remain engraved in the memory of Manal Benchlikha. That day, the Moroccan singer opened the ball for the Women's African Cup of Nations (CAN) organized in Rabat, by performing her key songs at the Moulay Abdellah complex, just before the first match of the Atlas Lionesses. “ It was a huge honour” , she tells us in her living room in Marrakech.
“What is extraordinary is to compose a song in your room behind four walls, and to see three years later an audience made up of tens of thousands of people singing the lyrics in chorus ,” rejoices Manal, stars in the eyes. A major event, with the appearance of consecration for an artist who dreams big.
“ In 30 years, I would like people to say: 'Manal is the first to have done this'”, she hopes, installed on an armchair behind which sits one of her two Africa Music Awards for best female artist. Head held high, eyes straight, the singer wears the assured air of people who know what they want.
On a shelf, she keeps a copy of Divas, from Oum Kalthoum to Dalida , a book published on the sidelines of the eponymous exhibition organized by the Arab World Institute in Paris.
