Matteo Garrone's 'Io Capitano' Begins Filming in Senegal
The Italian director Matteo Garrone’s new film, Io Capitano (which translates to I, Captain in English) has recently begun filming in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Io Capitano is a coming-of-age adventure-drama story that follows the perilous journey of two young men, played by newcomers Moustapha Fall and Seydou Sarr. The pair must travel across the dangers of the desert of Dakar, and venture through the perils of the sea in order to reach Europe. Throughout this modern odyssey with contemporary themes, the two must also discover and deal with the ambiguities of the human soul.
Taking inspiration from the real stories of Kouassi Pli, Adama Mamadou, Arnaud Zohin, Amara Fofana, Brhane Tareke and Siaka Doumbia, Garrone is the mind behind the film’s idea and is credited as both director and writer. The screenplay was also penned by Massimo Gaudioso, who often works with Garonne, Massimo Ceccherini, and Andrea Tagliaferri. The film’s photography is by Paolo Carnera; the editing by Marco Spoletini, who has always worked with Garrone; set design by Dimitri Capuani; costume design by Stefano Ciammitti; sound design by Mirko Perri; and make-up by Dalia Colli. The film is an Italian/Belgian co-production. The Italian company Archimede co-produced Io Capitano along with Rai Cinema, Tarantula film, and France’s Pathé. Pathé International is also handling world sales.
Garrone is a two-time BAFTA Award nominee and four-time Palme D’or nominee, with two other wins at Cannes for the Grand Prize of the Jury with the 2008 film Gomorrah and his 2012 comedy-drama Reality. With Io Capitano, Garrone continues his trend of often casting new and relatively-unknown actors. Prior to this new film, Garrone was at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival with his film Pinocchio, starring Academy Award-winner Roberto Benigni. Read More…
