Meeting between Legislators and President Santiago described as a sign of seriousness and maturity
A recent meeting between legislators from the Democratic Party, Honor Colorado, and the independent Colorado bloc with President Santiago Peña has been described as a sign of seriousness and maturity in Paraguayan politics. Senator Silvio Ovelar praised the significance of the gathering, which allowed for discussion on several key issues from the legislative agenda.
Ovelar highlighted how this meeting brought together various political figures who had not collaborated closely for some time, and described it as a clear demonstration of the maturity of the Senate members. "It was very pleasant... it was a more eloquent demonstration of the seriousness, of the maturity above all things of the members of the Senate who participated today," he said during an interview on “Cuenta Final” aired by Universo 970 AM/Nación Media.
The senator also acknowledged the role of Basilio Núñez, the president of Congress, in facilitating the meeting at Mburuvicha Róga (the President's official residence). He noted that the opposition bloc's primary request was for greater openness and debate, even though the ruling party holds a comfortable majority. Ovelar mentioned that opposition members appeared content and relaxed during the discussions.
The President expressed the need to maintain a permanent dialogue channel as the government pushes forward with a series of reforms, including Fiscal Fund and Electoral Code reforms. Legislators also took the opportunity to present issues they view as crucial for further discussion.
