Angolan President Joao Lourenço Delivers First National Assembly Speech Since Re-Election
Angolan President Joao Lourenço has delivered his first speech before the National Assembly since his re-election, pledging to devote all his strength and attention to finding the best conditions for the population. The speech comes just a few weeks after his re-election for a second term.
President Lourenço acknowledged the country's recent turbulence, including two crises that have created difficulties for families, businesses, and state institutions. He highlighted the need to address the nation's pressing issues, including public debt, which has been reduced to 56.5% of the gross domestic product in 2022, down from 79.7% in 2021 and 123.8% in 2020.
The President emphasized the importance of economic reforms, which have contributed to the positive balance of the country's finances. He also highlighted the need for infrastructure development, including education reforms, healthcare, road, and maritime infrastructure.
The re-election of the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has been met with opposition, with some critics arguing that the country needs to address pressing matters like education reforms and infrastructure development.
Despite criticism, the President's speech has been well-received by some, who see it as a comprehensive and forward-looking address. Don Afonso Nunes, a pastor at Toicoiste church, described the speech as "very important, long, compact, and full of perspectives that the country needs."
