Haywood County is set to transform into a winter wonderland during the Ice Fest, a four-day celebration from January 30 to February 2. This exciting event will feature a variety of activities designed to entertain and engage visitors of all ages, making it the perfect antidote to the mid-winter blues.
Signature Events
1. Maggie Valley Ice Festival
One of the highlights of Ice Fest is the Maggie Valley Ice Festival, where attendees can enjoy live ice carving demonstrations, participate in ice games, and explore a range of vendors. The festival will take place on February 1 from 4-9 p.m. at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. Families can slide down an ice slide, engage in ice hockey, and enjoy s’mores by the fire. Local vendors and food trucks will be on-site, offering delicious bites and unique shopping opportunities. Tickets are $5 in advance or $8 on the day of the event, with free admission for children 12 and under.
2. Ice Stroll in Waynesville
On January 31 from 5-8 p.m., downtown Waynesville will come alive with enchanting ice sculptures lining the streets. Local businesses will stay open late, providing cozy treats and beverages as visitors admire the frozen masterpieces. This year, a new “Chill Zone” will offer tasty drinks “on the rocks.”
3. Cool Jazz Concert
Kick off the festivities with a Cool Jazz Concert at HART Theatre on January 30 at 7 p.m. Enjoy smooth sounds from Grammy-nominated artist Alfredo Rodriguez, whose modern jazz style is inspired by bebop and big band music. Tickets range from $19 to $39.
4. Cataloochee Ski Torch Run
On the evening of January 30 at 10:30 p.m., witness the magical Torch Run at Cataloochee Ski Area. Cozy up on the lodge deck or at the bottom of the slopes to watch the staff light up the mountain in a stunning display. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed via Cataloochee’s aerial view webcam.

- Winter Birding Walk at Lake Junaluska: Join a guided birding adventure on January 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $10 per person. Spot winter residents and majestic nesting eagles along the scenic trail.

- Canton’s Ice Rink: Enjoy free ice skating at the artificial rink in downtown Canton, open from 4-8 p.m. on January 31 and 12-5 p.m. on February 1-2.
- Frosty 5K: Join a family-friendly Frosty 5K walk or run on February 2 from 10 a.m. to noon at Haywood Community College. Participants will receive an event t-shirt and enjoy surprise stations along the route, with a festive after-party featuring hot chocolate and treats.
- Polar Express Model Train Expo: On February 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., immerse yourself in the magical world of trains at the Model Train Museum in Iron Duff. Enjoy hot cocoa, bison chili, and a cozy bonfire while viewing the intricate model train layouts.
- Winter Wonderland Maker’s Market: Explore a variety of arts and crafts at Frog Level Brewing on February 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. while sipping on the exclusive Frosty Frogger Lager.
