Meta’s Candidacy Confirmed, Freedom Party Approves Party President’s Decision
Ilir Meta, the President of the Freedom Party, has officially announced his candidacy for the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 11, 2025, running on an open list in the city of Tirana. This decision was confirmed in a statement released by the Freedom Party, which also outlined their coalition with the “Democratic Party – Alliance for a Greater Albania” (PD-ASHM), with the Democratic Party (DP) as the leading force.
The leadership of the Freedom Party approved Meta's candidacy during a meeting on Monday. The coalition will operate under the Democratic Party's banner and will present a multi-member candidate list, which will be finalized by Sali Berisha, the leader of the DP. The coalition includes several long-time allies of the Democratic Party, such as Fatmir Mediu, Agron Duka, Nard Ndoka, Vangjel Dule, and Shpëtim Idrizi, along with various other parties. The Democratic Party has allocated eight parliamentary seats for its allies, with the Freedom Party securing four guaranteed positions.
The confirmed candidates from the Freedom Party include Ilir Meta, Tedi Blushi, Edmond Haxhinasto, and Erisa Xhixho. Additionally, the Republican Party, the Union for Human Rights Party, and the Justice, Integration, and Unity Party will each have one guaranteed seat in the coalition’s list.
Meta has expressed that this coalition represents a significant political shift in Albania and aims to implement a new program focused on addressing the country's depopulation issues and improving living conditions for its citizens. In an audio message from pretrial detention, he described the coalition with the Democratic Party as historic, predicting a major victory on May 11 that would lead to the overthrow of the current regime. He emphasized the coalition's commitment to developing a sustainable economy rooted in traditional values such as patriotism and family principles.
The coalition aims to unite a diverse array of political forces to challenge the ruling government and reshape Albania’s political landscape in the upcoming elections.
