Mexico City Registers Slight Increase in Covid-19 Cases
Amid the rise in Covid-19 cases across the country, Mexico City's Ministry of Health (Sedesa) has reported a minor uptick in cases within the capital over recent weeks. Olivia López Arellano, head of Sedesa, discussed this trend in an interview with MILENIO Televisión, noting the increase occurred between June and July, a period that also saw a rise last year.
López Arellano highlighted:
“Covid-19 is here to stay. It is already part of the respiratory viruses that occur in certain seasonal periods, especially in winter, but we have also identified through epidemiological monitoring of the national and local health system that we have an increase in cases between June and July.”
She emphasized that this increase is slight and reassured that citizens are now familiar with protective measures during transportation, travel, vacation periods, and crowded events. However, she urged the public to remain vigilant and continue following preventive practices such as proper hand washing, using antibacterial gel, practicing good sneezing etiquette, and self-isolating if symptoms appear.
López Arellano also recommended:
- Face masks: Continue using them, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces.
- Health centers: Visit if experiencing respiratory complications.
She further noted that there have been no deaths from Covid-19 in the capital recently, and no cases have required hospitalization in the IMSS-Bienestar hospital network. She cautioned against causing unnecessary alarm regarding hospital saturation, stating that the hospitals are well-prepared to handle serious respiratory illnesses, including Covid-19.
