MTN to launch 5G services in Ivory Coast next January
MTN Cote d'Ivoire has unveiled its plans to introduce its 5G network in the country by January 2024. This launch will coincide with the Africa Cup of Nations, the largest national football tournament in Africa. The event is scheduled to take place between January and February next year, with Ivory Coast as the host nation. According to reports from Ecofin, the testing of 5G services has already commenced in various parts of Abidjan, the capital city.
MTN Group, a South African-based telecommunications company, has previously launched 5G services in South Africa, Nigeria, and Zambia. Furthermore, they have announced their intention to invest $1 billion in expanding 5G infrastructure in Ghana. In November, the company also initiated a 5G pilot program in the Republic of Congo.
Currently, MTN holds approximately 34 percent of the market share in the Ivory Coast, while Orange leads with around 43 percent. Orange has indicated its plans to introduce 5G services in the Ivory Coast sometime in 2023.
