Municipal subsidies for students: Dr Babacar Diop awaits the endowment fund
In response to the Thiéssois students of the Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor, requesting the support of the competent authorities and goodwill to "pay the rents of the premises that we occupy in the cities where we are continuing our studies", the town hall of Ville de Thiès said "wait to receive 103 million CFA francs, representing our share of the endowment fund, to release the subsidies intended for Thiéssois students enrolled in the country's universities". The town's first magistrate, Dr Babacar Diop, concerned about "the situation of students who could be evicted from their accommodation at the start of the school year, due to several months of rent arrears", remarks that "the State has the endowment fund has not yet been released and the student subsidies are lodged in this fund in the amount of 103 million CFA francs”. Thanks to a press conference, the city councilor of the Capital of Rail indicated: “I cannot pay them until this money is released. That's our only problem. The day they learn that the money is available, they come the next day to take it.
The mayor of Thiès makes the students understand that "my decision to grant you a grant of 15 million Cfa, an amount which could be revised upwards, is proof that we are on your side, especially since no structure received a subsidy of this importance from the town hall". Dr Babacar Diop says he made the same statement to Thiéssois students from the universities of Sine-Saloum, Cheikh Anta Diop, Amadou Moctar Mbow from Dakar, Gaston Berger from Saint-Louis, Alioune Diop from Bambey, Assane Seck from Ziguinchor. A product of the student movement, the former president of the Coordination of Thiéssois students in Dakar, an academic and member of the Autonomous Union of Higher Education (Saes), believes that he “knows the problems of students for having experienced them”. Dr Babacar Diop indicates "having secured the orientation of this fund which, traditionally, was versed in operation and fuel. For the first time, no franc entered the operating expenses of the Mayor's Office. This money is distributed between culture, youth movements and students, scholarships”. Read More…
