Mykonos beach club set to lose license
After a unanimous decision by the Quality of Life Committee of the Municipality of Mykonos, the operation of the famous Principote beach club on the island has been suspended. Simultaneously, demolitions on the island are progressing based on previous protocols.
The Environment Ministry sent an urgent letter to the municipality and the South Aegean Regional Authority on Tuesday requesting the revocation of Principote's operating license. This followed the finalization of the autopsy report by the Council for Urban Planning Issues and Disputes of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (KESYPOTHA) based on the assessment of environmental inspectors (with a few minor exceptions).
The report revealed that almost 40,000 square meters of illegal constructions were recorded.
Moreover, Principote obtained a catering license from the Regional Tourism Service of the Cyclades, which is a department under the Tourism Ministry. Reports indicate that there has been a request to suspend this license as well.
Mayor Konstantinos Koukas of Mykonos said, "In the past, we have had cases where the municipality declined to grant a license and the business approached the Regional Tourism Service of the Cyclades and obtained one. There is a lack of coordination between departments, and one does not communicate with the other." The company plans to appeal against the decision immediately, seeking a "freeze" on the procedure, among other things.
According to the Greek version of Kathimerini, the company's lawyer Michael Farantos said, "We consider the decision illegal. It has distorted the law and did not take into account any of our claims." He further added, "We will exhaust every legal means to prevent Principote's operation being suspended. Right now, 700 people are at risk of losing their jobs."
