Tragic Incident in Central Taiwan: One Fatality and Eight Injured as Crane Collides with MRT Train
In a devastating incident that occurred today in central Taiwan, a crane malfunction led to a catastrophic accident involving a moving train from the Green Line of the Taichung Metro. Regrettably, one passenger lost their life, while eight others sustained injuries.
The unfortunate event took place at a construction site located at the intersection of Wenxin South 5th Road and Wenxin Road, situated in Taichung City's Nantun District. At approximately 12:29 p.m., the boom of a crane suddenly collapsed, as reported by CNA. Tragically, it plummeted from atop a nearby building, directly onto a moving Taichung MRT Green Line train near Feng-le Park Station.
The forceful impact of the falling crane caused significant damage to the train. It tore through the train's side, causing extensive damage to metal sheets, shattering glass windows, and even propelling some seats through the air. The front of the train also endured severe structural harm.

Authorities revealed that among the eight injured passengers, two were elementary school students whose feet were wounded by shattered glass. Additionally, a foreign national suffered head lacerations and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The passenger who tragically lost her life was identified as a 52-year-old woman with the surname Lin (林). She became trapped beneath the train's carriage when the accident occurred. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders to extricate her from beneath the wreckage, they discovered that she had sustained severe head trauma and showed no signs of life.
Emergency medical personnel immediately placed her in an ambulance, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital, as reported by SET News. The Taichung Fire Brigade disclosed that as the train was still in motion, the falling boom propelled the woman out of the carriage, resulting in her being crushed beneath the train.
An investigation into the cause of this devastating accident is currently underway. Meanwhile, the Taichung MRT has announced service disruptions on the Beitun Main Station to Taichung City Hall Station route, as well as the Jiuzhangli Station to HSR Taichung Station route. Partial service is being provided on these affected lines.
