National Assembly committee of 18 members formed for functional parliament
An 18-member special committee has been formed in Pakistan's National Assembly to ensure the smooth functioning of parliament, following a motion adopted by the Assembly. The decision came in response to heightened political tensions, particularly after the arrest of several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers within the Parliament House premises.
The committee, which includes an equal number of representatives from both the government and opposition, was established to address issues related to the parliament, parliamentarians, and the rules governing parliamentary procedures. The committee members include prominent figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Naveed Qamar, and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
The committee's Terms of Reference (TORs) involve discussing and recommending solutions to issues concerning the parliament's operations, the conduct of business, and constitutional matters. This initiative was driven by a resolution tabled by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, which called for a collaborative approach to addressing challenges facing the legislative body.
The formation of this committee follows a session presided over by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, amidst the backdrop of the arrest of PTI lawmakers for allegedly violating the newly enacted Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024. In response to the incident, the Speaker also took disciplinary action by suspending the House's Sergeant at Arms and four other security officials for their role in the security breach that allowed the arrests to occur within the parliamentary premises.
