Ghana Electoral Commission Introduces Liveness Detection to Prevent Voter Verification Fraud
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has taken a significant step to prevent voter verification fraud by incorporating a liveness detection feature into its biometric voter verification system. This move comes in response to a recent incident where the names of some registered voters were illegally transferred from one polling station to another without their knowledge or consent.
The incident, which occurred in the Sagnerigu and Tamale South constituencies, involved the illegal transfer of 38 voters from their original polling stations to others. The EC's investigation revealed that the transfer was done using the voters' ID cards, with their photos being used for voter verification and to effect the transfers.
To prevent such incidents in the future, the EC has introduced a liveness detection feature into its biometric voter verification system. This feature is designed to ensure that the biometric data being captured is from a live, present human being and not from a spoofed source such as a photograph. The liveness check has been built into the system to prevent any future occurrences of voter verification fraud.
The EC has reiterated its commitment to organizing free and credible elections. The body is continuing its investigations into the matter to ensure that the practice of illegal voter transfers is not widespread and will inform the public accordingly once the findings have been concluded. Any such transfers will be reversed, and the perpetrators will be made to face justice for their actions.
The EC has faced a couple of challenges related to its biometric voter registration and verification system. In addition to the incident of illegal voter transfers, the body has also addressed an incident concerning an individual who was arrested in possession of a biometric verification device. The EC has assured the public that these incidents do not pose a danger to the integrity of the elections.
The introduction of liveness detection by the EC is a significant step towards preventing voter verification fraud and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. As Ghana prepares for its presidential election on December 7, the EC's commitment to free and credible elections is crucial in maintaining the trust of the electorate and upholding the country's democratic values.
