New Oslo Bishop Ready to Raise Her Voice
Pastor Sunniva Gylver, known for her distinctive dreadlocks and unwavering faith, was ordained as the bishop of Oslo on Sunday in a special service at the Oslo Cathedral, attended by the monarch and the prime minister. At 58 years old, Gylver brings decades of experience as a parish pastor in Oslo and a commitment to addressing contemporary human values issues within Norway’s Lutheran church.
Gylver has long advocated for a clear voice on social matters, welcoming religious diversity and promoting the transformation of Norway’s former state church into a more inclusive “people’s church.” She made history as the first female pastor invited to speak in a mosque in Norway and is recognized for her approachable style, often wearing a simple T-shirt that reads "PREST" (pastor). An accomplished author and television host, she has explored various perspectives on life through her work.
Having experienced profound personal loss with the death of her husband from cancer in 2021, Gylver understands the complexities of human emotion and aims to support others navigating similar challenges. As she steps into her role leading The Norwegian Church in Oslo, Asker, and Bærum, she emphasizes the importance of collaboration, stating that a bishop “must be a team player” and expressing her eagerness to work alongside church leaders, volunteers, and elected officials.
In her inaugural sermon, Gylver urged church-goers to actively engage in discussions about human values, acknowledging the challenges of living in a polarized society. “We live in uneasy times, in a fantastic and terrible world,” she remarked, highlighting the need for faith, hope, and advocacy for human dignity.
Her call to action resonates particularly in today’s climate, where leaders are increasingly challenged to speak out against controversial views. Gylver succeeds Kari Veiteberg, who has returned to her role as a street pastor for Kirkens Bymisjon. With her unique ability to communicate the Christian faith in an engaging manner, Gylver is poised to make a significant impact as the new bishop of Oslo.
