Urgent Action as Croatian Government Secures Srđ Slope Above Dubrovnik’s Key Highway
In response to growing concerns over the stability of the Srđ slope above the D8 state road, the Croatian government is set to take urgent action. Following a recent meeting between Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković and officials from the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure, the government will adopt a conclusion at today’s session aimed at the extraordinary rehabilitation of the Srđ slope.
The primary goal of this initiative is to protect the critical section of the D8 highway and prevent further landslides that could pose significant risks to motorists and local residents. During the meeting held in Zagreb, it was agreed that Hrvatske ceste (Croatian Highways) and the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure would undertake necessary measures to mitigate the risk of landslides and related accidents. The City of Dubrovnik will assist in coordinating efforts with landowners in the area.
To address the immediate concerns, the government plans to initiate emergency intervention measures and install protective structures along the most vulnerable 150-meter section of the D8. This action will be based on existing project documentation and will serve as a foundation for developing a comprehensive, long-term solution for landslide protection along this critical roadway.
The proposal for implementing these emergency and extraordinary rehabilitation measures is on the agenda for today’s open session of the government, highlighting the urgency and importance of safeguarding this vital transportation route.
As the situation develops, local authorities and residents remain hopeful that these measures will effectively enhance the safety and stability of the D8 highway, ensuring continued access and protection for the Dubrovnik area.
