'Oh My Kadhale': Malay, Tamil, English fusion song goes viral
A song that has taken the internet by storm, "Oh My Kadhale" (Oh My Love) has amassed over a million views on YouTube within just two weeks of its release. This melodious fusion of Malay, Tamil, and English lyrics is the brainchild of three Malaysian friends from different ethnic backgrounds: Zubir Khan, Ezra Kairo, and Yue Wai Ming.
The idea for "Oh My Kadhale" was born when Zubir Khan, a 24-year-old singer of Malay-Pakistani descent, was livestreaming on TikTok. Ezra Kairo, a Malaysian Indian singer, commented on the video, inviting Zubir to collaborate on a song that would express love and affection. The two musicians met up and created the song in a freestyle manner, with Zubir composing the Tamil lyrics and Ezra handling the Malay parts. They later brought in Yue Wai Ming, a young Chinese composer, to complete the song.
What sets "Oh My Kadhale" apart is its blend of languages and cultures. The song features Malay and Tamil lyrics, with a touch of English, and is infused with the rhythm and style of Tamil music. The music video showcases Malaysia's ethnic diversity, with backup dancers dressed in traditional attire to demonstrate the richness of Malaysian culture.
Zubir Khan's ability to speak Tamil fluently is a result of his upbringing in an estate in Sepang, Selangor, where he was surrounded by Indian friends and neighbors. He learned to pronounce Tamil words correctly with the help of his friends and has even composed seven Tamil songs, including "Yennode Macha" (You Are My Friend).
Despite facing racist comments on social media, Zubir Khan remains committed to promoting unity through his music. He believes that understanding and appreciating different cultures is key to strengthening bonds between people of different races. "We are all Malaysians and need each other," he says. "We must make friends with everyone in order to open up our minds as we live in a multicultural and multiethnic society."
