Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds and Swedish singer-songwriter Loreen are set to release their collaborative EP, SAGES, on March 21. The project was born out of a connection made after Loreen's remarkable victory at Eurovision, where she won for the second time. Following her win, the two artists connected via Instagram, leading to an exciting musical collaboration.
In an interview with Poppland, a music show on radio station Rás 2, Ólafur shared how their collaboration began. After Loreen's Eurovision win, he felt inspired to reach out to her. To his surprise, he discovered that she was already following him on Instagram. When he followed her back, Loreen quickly sent him a message asking, “What are you doing next week?”
The day after her Eurovision victory, Loreen flew to Iceland, where the two artists wrote a song together. Initially, her visit was planned for just two or three days, but their chemistry in the studio was undeniable. Ólafur remarked, “We clicked incredibly well. We have a great time in the studio when we’re writing, so we decided to do it again.”
The duo has already released two singles from SAGES: “In the Sound of Breathing” and “Opening,” accompanied by a cinematic music video directed by Þóra Hilmarsdóttir. The EP reflects their collaborative spirit and showcases their unique musical styles.
When asked about the possibility of touring together, Ólafur mentioned that they had recently discussed it. However, he expressed uncertainty about how their project would translate to a live setting. “This is an auditory experience, and we have spent many months in the studio perfecting the sound,” he explained. Unlike his usual approach to live performances, where he sees albums as works in progress, he feels that SAGES represents a final version that may not evolve in a live context.
Despite this, both artists are intrigued by the idea of performing live. Ólafur noted, “We both want to experience the feeling of being on stage, playing for an audience. We are both incredibly proud of these songs.”
The release of SAGES marks an exciting chapter for both Ólafur Arnalds and Loreen, blending their artistic talents into a cohesive project. As they prepare for the EP's launch, fans eagerly anticipate the unique sound and emotional depth that this collaboration promises to deliver.
