Oti Region to Plant 100,000 Trees
Mr. Henry Kudiabor, the Assistant Manager of the Forestry Division in the Oti Region, recently shared that approximately 100,000 trees will be planted in the region to commemorate this year's Green Ghana Day.
He emphasized the successful management of previously planted trees, particularly those within the designated forest areas. However, Mr. Kudiabor highlighted a significant challenge posed by bushfires caused by certain individuals, which adversely affected the growth of many trees.
During an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kudiabor revealed that a shortage of labor had also become a concern. Some personnel participating in the youth afforestation program had ceased working due to the government's failure to pay their salaries. Only a few dedicated individuals remained to assist in the maintenance of the surviving trees.
Despite the difficulties faced by some schools involved in tree planting, Mr. Kudiabor mentioned that approximately 80 percent of the previously planted trees had managed to survive. He attributed the challenges to mismanagement on the part of authorities and the occurrence of bushfires.
Mr. Kudiabor urged the public to actively participate in the tree-planting initiative, highlighting the benefits that future generations would reap from these efforts. Stressing the importance of reforestation, he emphasized the need to replace old trees that had been cut down and encouraged individuals to protect trees against any potential disasters.
Additionally, it was mentioned that the Nkwanta South Municipality was expected to contribute around 15,000 trees to the overall planting target, including those within the forest-reserved areas.
