Over 1 Million German Students Have Studied in Another EU Country With Erasmus

The German Academic Service (DAAD) has revealed that since the launch of the EU Erasmus+ programme, over one million German students have been able to travel to another European country for study purposes.
Apart from German students, in the last 35 years, more than 12 million Europeans in total have taken part in the Erasmus programme, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“The EU Erasmus+ programme has been a model of success for 35 years: since its launch on 15 June 1987, Erasmus has enabled around a million German students to travel to another European country. More than twelve million Europeans in total have taken part in Erasmus,” the statement of DAAD reads.
Commenting on these figures, the President of DAAD, Joybrato Mukherjee, said that Erasmus served as an emotional as well as an intellectual bond for the young European generation.
After more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, German students are eager to spend some time abroad. The number of applications has already exceeded that of the entire previous year.
Mukherjee said this year they have seen 20 per cent more Erasmus applications from German universities than in 2021. Around 71,000 applications have already been received.
The current Erasmus programme (2021-2027) has a budget of over €28 billion to support the educational policy objectives of the EU Commission, thereby increasing the attractiveness of Europe as a location for academic study and research.
Within higher education, Erasmus is aimed at all students and members of the higher education institutions for their study and internship stays. It has been noted that the new programme period places emphasis on promoting equal opportunities, diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and digital transformation.
Additionally, the new programme period also rewards the use of sustainable transport modes for travel outside Germany.
“Erasmus+ is the EU programme for education, training, youth and sport. It follows the motto ‘Enriching lives, opening minds’ to promote cooperation in all areas of education throughout Europe,” DAAD highlighted.
A total of 33 countries participate in the Erasmus programme – the EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey.
Previously, SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that Germany is offering more funds for students under the Erasmus programme. The German Ministry of Education has increased the financial assistance in a bid to boost the living allowance for students pursuing their academic careers in other countries.
The head of the Education Ministry, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, said that the new fund had been increased to €57 million. According to her, such an amount will enable the authority to support up to 13,700 students. Read More...
