Paulo Responds to Spyro’s Claim of Not Earning a Dime Under His Label
Paulo Okoye, the showbiz promoter and founder of One Africa Music Fest, has addressed recent claims made by artist Spyro regarding his time under Paulo's record label. In an interview with Echoroom, Spyro alleged that he never received any payment while signed to the label, stating that he often had to borrow money from his former record label boss to meet his financial needs.
Spyro expressed his frustrations, saying, “Myself and my partner, we were signed to a record label. My record label was owned by a billionaire; he had about three Rolls Royces. I was signed and nothing was happening; I was not even getting a dime. If I needed money, I had to go borrow money for him to return. I mean, he is a nice person, but I do not think he understands the label business as at then; I do not know about now.”
In response to Spyro’s claims, Paulo took to Instagram to share a detailed breakdown of the expenses incurred on Spyro during his time at the label in 2017, which totaled N12 million. He provided evidence that this amount covered various costs, including music videos, travel, and accommodation.
Paulo wrote, “Wow @spyro_official. Wow wow 2017 Spyro expenses. N4.2m + 2 music videos. First ever travel Dubai, UK etc. Flight, hotel, total spent N12m. Money made with Spyro, zero kobo naira. But it is well, I am happy for him.”
The exchange highlights the complexities of the music industry, particularly regarding financial arrangements between artists and record labels. While Spyro feels he did not benefit financially from his time with Paulo’s label, Paulo’s response emphasizes the significant investment made in Spyro’s career, despite not seeing a return. This situation underscores the challenges artists and promoters face in navigating the business side of the music industry.
