Ubi Franklin Used Davido’s Name to Scam Me of $5K – Spyro
Nigerian singer Spyro has publicly accused music executive Ubi Franklin of scamming him out of $5,000. In a recent interview on the Echoroom podcast, Spyro detailed how he was misled into performing at a birthday party in Ghana under the pretense that the request came from popular artist Davido.
Spyro recounted that Franklin contacted him, claiming that Davido wanted him to perform at Iyanya’s birthday party in Ghana. Despite his initial reluctance to perform without his management present, Spyro agreed to go after Franklin assured him of the arrangement.
Upon arriving in Ghana, Spyro met with Davido, who was unaware of the performance arrangement. Franklin later approached Spyro, stating that Davido had requested him to perform and that he would be compensated with $5,000. Spyro expressed his usual fee of N20 million and reiterated that he could not perform without his management's involvement.
Despite his reservations, Spyro felt compelled to perform when Franklin insisted, especially with dignitaries in attendance. After the performance, Spyro sought payment from Franklin, but he was met with silence. Spyro described the situation as frustrating, stating that Franklin ignored him even after they returned to Lagos.
“He was taking me for a fool and told me not to call Davido because he didn’t ask him to have me perform,” Spyro said. He also mentioned that Pastor Bolaji was brought into the matter, but there was still no resolution.
Expressing his disappointment, Spyro emphasized that he once respected Franklin but felt betrayed by the experience. He stated, “It was painful to be taken advantage of,” and expressed his desire to protect other artists from falling victim to similar scams.
Spyro's allegations highlight the challenges artists face in the industry, particularly regarding trust and financial dealings. As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about accountability and the importance of clear communication in professional relationships within the music industry.
