Philippine Vice President Quits Political Party
Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has decided to sever ties with the political party that brought her to power, citing concerns over "political powerplay." This move indicates potential divisions among President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s allies, nearly a year into his term.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Duterte announced her resignation from the Lakas-CMD party, although she did not specify the exact reason behind her decision. Nevertheless, she emphasized her unwavering commitment to serving the country under Marcos's leadership.
"I stand before you today because of the unwavering trust bestowed upon me by the Filipino people to lead and serve our nation. This trust cannot be tainted by political toxicity or undermined by deplorable political powerplay," expressed the vice president.
Duterte's departure from the party comes following the loss of a significant position in the House of Representatives by former President and Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a prominent member of Lakas-CMD. Arroyo had expressed her desire to become the House leader following the 2022 elections, although she denied any involvement in an attempt to remove current Speaker Martin Romualdez, who is also Marcos's cousin.
Duterte, the daughter of former leader Rodrigo Duterte, joined Arroyo's party shortly before running as Marcos's vice president in last year's elections. Their collaboration proved fruitful, as they secured the top two positions in the country by substantial margins, garnering substantial support in Congress.
The alliance between Marcos and Duterte faces a test following their resounding victory in the previous elections.
