‘Bikinis don’t look good on bigger girls? Hmm, I’m gonna have to disagree,’ says Loey Lane at the start of her viral response to the haters: ‘Why fat girls shouldn’t wear bikinis.’
Loey is a 22-year-old fashion and beauty vlogger, with over 345,000 followers on YouTube and more than 90,000 on Instagram.
Her response to all the dumb and hurtful things people have said about her wearing bikinis in her videos has now been viewed 846,000 times since it was posted last month.
‘I’ve learnt that apparently fat girls in bikinis get a lot of mixed reviews,’ she says. ‘So, I thought I’d give you a list today of the reasons why fat girls shouldn’t wear bikinis. Apparently.’
Loey begins ‘I didn’t realise there was a meeting and all the people who are allowed to decide what’s attractive and what’s not are now commenters on YouTube.’
‘Seeing this much skin on a bigger woman makes someone else uncomfortable,’ she goes on. Her response: ‘Why does someone else get to dictate what you put on your body?’
Something else Loey says she’s constantly being told is that she’s promoting obesity. To that, she says: ‘When I’m sitting there on the beach in a bikini, I’m not usually shoving my face full of junk food, or screaming at the top of my lungs about how everyone should be overweight.’
Instead, she says, ‘I’m just minding my own business.’ That doesn’t stop strangers saying things like ‘Yo, fatty, lay off the hamburgers,’ though. Or, when she’s eating fruit, telling her that she’s ‘pretending to be healthy.’
However, what ‘really, really, really’ bothers Loey is when larger women show skin in a bikini, they’re told: ‘we’re asking for feedback.’
‘So that’s to justify someone else saying to me, “Hey, that swimsuit looks like shit on you, go work out,”‘ she says. She admits she finds it really ‘scary’ that people assume because a larger person is wearing less clothes, they’re asking for feedback on their body.
‘Any human being, they’re looking looking for your approval or your praise,’ she points out. If they’ve posted it on social media, she says, it’s ‘probably because they think they look bomb in it, and to tell them anything less is just such a bad and negative thing to do.’
Loey concludes: ‘You know, now, going over this list, I don’t really think any of these excuses are valid.
‘So does that mean we get to continue wearing what we want? Hot damn, it’s not the 1950s after all.’
