Portugal is set to participate in the Volleyball World Cup for the third time
Portugal is set to participate in the Volleyball World Championship for the third time, with the tournament scheduled to take place between September 12 and 28, 2025, in the Philippines, as confirmed by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The Portuguese national team, ranked ninth among the 15 teams that qualified by ranking, will join the host nation, the Philippines, world champion Italy, and the top three teams from each of the continental championships in the expanded 32-team competition.
In the tournament's first phase, the teams will be divided into eight groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the round of 16.
João José, the coach of the Portuguese team, expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming competition, emphasizing the importance of competing at this level to further develop and solidify Portugal's position in international volleyball. João José, who was recognized as the best blocker in Portugal’s last World Championship appearance in 2002 in Argentina, praised the efforts of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) under the leadership of Vicente Araújo in achieving this qualification.
Portugal's previous appearances in the Volleyball World Championship include a 15th place finish in 1956 in France and an impressive eighth place finish in 2002 in Argentina.
The 21st edition of the Volleyball World Championship will be held across two cities in the Philippines, with the official draw taking place on September 14, 2025, in Manila.
