Portugal with more medals and more titles in Oran
More medals and more titles than four years ago. This is the balance of Portuguese participation in the Mediterranean Games, which took place in Oran, Algeria. After the 24 medals (three golds, eight silvers and 13 bronzes) won in the first Portuguese participation in the event, four years ago, in Tarragona, Portugal conquered 25 podium positions, of which seven titles, ten more silver and eight bronze.
In a participation with fewer athletes (159, 62 less than in Tarragona) in fewer modalities (20, 9 less than in the Spanish event, swimming was the most prominent entourage, with nine medals won, three of which were gold. titles went to Camila Rebelo, winner in the 100m and 200m backstroke, and Diogo Ribeiro also left Oran with two medals, one gold in the 50m butterfly and another silver in the 100m freestyle.
After swimming, athletics was the second sport that contributed the most to the Portuguese medalist, with eight medals, three of which were gold. Leandro Ramos dominated the javelin throw, while João Coelho and Cátia Azevedo won the 400m flat final. Another of the team's highlights was the veteran sprinter Lorene Bazolo. The 39-year-old athlete was second in the 100m final and third in the 200m final.
The other title of the Portuguese delegation took place in road cycling, with Rafaela Reias triumphing in the individual time trial. There were also medals won in shooting, artistic gymnastics and table tennis, and five national records were broken in this competition, in addition to the 20 best marks of 2022.
Twenty-four of the 27 countries participating in this edition of the Mediterranean Games won medals. Italy was by far the country with the most medals, 159 (48 gold), followed by Turkey (108, 45 gold) and France (81, 21 gold). Portugal ranked ninth in the medal rankings. Read More…
