RBI rules break Apple payments in India, Apple stops taking credit and debit card payments

The Apple Support page shows that users can make purchases and subscribe to services by paying via net banking, UPI or Apple ID Balance.

Apple has stopped accepting card payments for subscriptions and app payments on the App Store. Users in India can no longer use their credit or debit cards to make payments for services or purchases on the App Store. Why? It is because of the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines for auto-debit payments which were announced last year.

The Apple Support page shows that users can make purchases and subscribe to services by paying through net banking, UPI or Apple ID Balance. Even if you had previously added your card details to your Apple ID account, it will not proceed with an auto-debit payment due to the new guidelines and is likely to show the “This card type is no longer supported” error.

“Regulatory requirements in India apply to the processing of recurring transactions. If you hold an Indian debit or credit card and you have a subscription, these changes impact your transactions. Some transactions might be declined by banks and card issuers. To continue enjoying your subscriptions, you can pay with your Apple ID balance. You can add to your Apple ID balance using App Store Codes, Net Banking, and UPI,” the support page read.

For the uninitiated, the RBI announced the new auto-debit payment guidelines last year, which require banks to send a pre-debit notification 24 hours before the automatic payment is being processed. This is required for each transaction every month. Recurring payments above Rs 5,000 can only be done with OTP before the debit. Most banks and online services have failed to adhere to the new guidelines. This not only impacted customers but also businesses.

The only way around for Apple users in India to make payments is by adding funds to their Apple ID. Users can do so via net banking or UPI.

How to add funds to your Apple ID?

The steps to adding funds to your Apple ID are quite simple. To do so:

- Go to the Apple App Store on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Tap your photo at the top-right corner of the screen.
- Tap “Add money to account”. Here, you can select an amount to add to your account. Tap on the on-screen instructions to verify your payment details and you are good to go. Read More...
