Renowned filmmaker Ruben Ostlund has set his sights on his upcoming Film which is scheduled to commence production in the Fall of 2024
Ruben Östlund, who recently served as the Jury President for the 76th Cannes Film Festival, has been hinting at his upcoming project in interviews with various media outlets. The film, titled "The Entertainment System is Down," is slated to begin shooting in the autumn of 2024, as revealed by Östlund to CineEuropa.
According to Östlund, the storyline revolves around a long-haul flight where the onboard entertainment system malfunctions, leaving the passengers to confront their own boredom and thoughts as modern individuals.
He plans to incorporate a scene in which a young boy asks his older brother for the use of his iPad, only to be told he must wait for five minutes.
Östlund elaborates on this scene, expressing his desire to challenge the audience's patience by presenting the boy's experience in real-time. As the boy anxiously peruses the catalog, the restlessness grows, and he repeatedly inquires about the remaining time to his mother, who responds with diminishing seconds.
Östlund finds amusement in the notion that viewers will become increasingly frustrated once they realize the continuous shot is unfolding in real-time. He aims to make history with this unconventional approach.
Östlund further emphasizes that his film intends to provoke more walkouts at Cannes than any previous film, surpassing the impact of violent or disturbing content. By delving into the solitude of one's thoughts and daring the audience to do the same, Östlund believes he can create a uniquely captivating and thought-provoking experience.
