Retinoids – the miracle substance against wrinkles?
There are many who want to find the "miracle cream" that will prevent the aging of the skin. But does it exist?
Hair doctors Lykke Barck and Marta Laskowski explain everything you want to know about retinoids and how to get the best effect from your anti-wrinkle cream.
There are many expensive anti aging products on the market that promise brilliant results but is there anything that really works?
The substance that is most well studied and has shown the best results for "anti-aging" the skin are retinoids.
What are retinoids?
Retinoids are a collective name for different types of A vitamins. These substances consist of small fat-soluble molecules that have the ability to penetrate the skin, bypassing the so-called skin barrier. Retinoids can therefore have an effect on cells that are found further down in the skin – in the dermis – where the aging process takes place. The leather contains, among other things, collagen and elastin, which break down as we get older, which leads to less elastic skin and wrinkles.
Available in cream form and tablets
Retinoids can stimulate the new formation of collagen and elastin. In addition, retinoids inhibit the formation of pigments in the skin, and retinoids have therefore emerged as a popular ingredient in the skin care industry. In the medical world, retinoids are used both in cream form and tablets against various skin conditions, for example against acne because retinoids also affect sebum production and have an inhibitory effect on inflammation in the skin.
There are both naturally occurring retinoids and those produced synthetically, they differ in their chemical structure and strength. The active natural form, i.e. the one that has a direct effect on the cells, of retinoid in the skin is tretinoin (vitamin A acid). Other naturally occurring substances must undergo a transformation in the skin's cells before they can be effective. Read More…
