Romanian tennis player Irina Begu wins WTA 125 tournament in Montreux
Romanian tennis player Irina Begu claimed victory at the WTA 125 tournament in Montreux, Switzerland, on Sunday. She triumphed over Croatian Petra Marcinko with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the final. Despite losing the first set, Begu, who is ranked 130th in the world at age 34, made an impressive comeback to secure the win after one hour and 33 minutes of play.
With this victory, Begu earned a prize of $15,000 and 125 WTA points. Her opponent, the 18-year-old Marcinko, who is ranked 292nd, received $8,000 and 81 WTA points.
This win marks Begu's third WTA 125 title, following her previous victories in Indian Wells (2020) and Bucharest (2022). Throughout her career, Begu has secured five WTA singles titles and reached the finals four times, along with nine WTA doubles titles and seven additional finals appearances.
Next week, Irina Begu is set to compete at the WTA 125 tournament in Bucharest, the Tiriac Foundation Trophy.
