Russia Strikes Orphanage in Sudzha, Killing One Person
In a tragic incident, Russian Aerospace Forces conducted airstrikes on a boarding school in the occupied city of Sudzha, located in the Kursk region. According to Oleksiy Dmytrashkovskyi, the head of the Ukrainian military command for the area, the attack resulted in the death of one elderly woman who sustained severe injuries.
Dmytrashkovskyi reported that Russian aviation carried out two airstrikes near the boarding school, which housed elderly individuals, many of whom had disabilities. "As a result, a woman received a lacerated wound to her hand. By the morning, the woman passed away," he stated. The boarding school building suffered extensive damage, with all windows and doors blown out, raising urgent concerns about the safety and relocation of its vulnerable residents.
The boarding school was home to approximately 70 elderly individuals, many of whom were dealing with critical health issues, including disabilities, Parkinson's disease, and post-stroke conditions. Dmytrashkovskyi emphasized the dire situation, noting, "The question arose of where to relocate these people. They are all elderly, with many having disabilities, and one person with a mental illness. So the condition of these people is quite critical at the moment."
In total, there are about 2,000 people in areas of Russia controlled by Ukraine, with the boarding school being one of the facilities providing care for the elderly.
Ukrainian journalist Andriy Tsapliyenko pointed out that Russian authorities were aware that the boarding school was not housing any military personnel, as its residents had previously been featured in reports by both Ukrainian and foreign journalists. This raises serious questions about the targeting of civilian facilities during the ongoing conflict.
In its latest report, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that "enemy personnel and equipment were hit by operational-tactical aviation strikes and artillery fire" in Sudzha. However, the attack on the boarding school has drawn widespread condemnation and highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict.
The airstrike on the boarding school in Sudzha underscores the tragic impact of the ongoing war on vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and disabled. As the situation continues to evolve, the need for humanitarian assistance and protection for civilians remains critical. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of military actions in populated areas and the urgent need for accountability in the conflict.
