Russian Danil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner set up US Open quarter-final clash
Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner have set up an exciting quarter-final clash at the US Open, with both players aiming to capitalize on the surprising early exits of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner, the world number one, advanced to the last eight by defeating US 14th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1. This marks the second time Sinner has reached the US Open quarter-finals. Despite an early setback in the first set, where he trailed 4-1, Sinner rallied to win, showcasing his resilience and determination.
On the other hand, Russian Danil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion and last year’s runner-up, had an easier path to the quarter-finals. He dominated Portugal’s Nuno Borges, winning 6-0, 6-1, 6-3. Medvedev's performance was clinical, breaking Borges' serve eight times and benefiting from his opponent's 51 unforced errors. This victory marks Medvedev’s fifth quarter-final appearance at the US Open in the last six years.
With Djokovic and Alcaraz out of the tournament, Medvedev is the only former champion remaining in the men's draw. The upcoming match between Sinner and Medvedev will be their fourth encounter this year, promising a tough and competitive battle, as both players are in excellent form.
On the women's side, world number one Iga Swiatek continued her strong run with a straight-sets win over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, staying on course for her sixth Grand Slam title.
