Rwandan Sculptor Blends Art with Social Reflection in Maiden Exhibition
At just 19 years old, Rwandan sculptor and visual artist Mugisha Josue is making waves in the local art scene with his debut exhibition, “La Corrida.” at Envision Gallery, this exhibition showcases Mugisha's innovative approach to art, intertwining tradition, creativity, and social commentary.
The title “La Corrida,” which translates to “The Bullfight” in Spanish, serves as a metaphor for the struggles people often avoid confronting. Mugisha explains, “People are often scared to confront struggles, preferring to sit back and observe from a distance, much like spectators at a bullfight.” Through his art, he seeks to challenge this complacency, urging viewers to engage actively with the personal and societal issues surrounding them.
Mugisha, a graduate of the Nyundo School of Arts, draws inspiration from the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo. He holds an A2 degree in sculpture and primarily works with recycled and upcycled materials, such as metals, wood, and plastics, merging sustainability with artistic innovation.
The exhibition features a diverse array of sculptures and drawings that delve into themes of life, identity, and societal norms. Notable pieces include:
- Kanyarwanda in Modern Times: This sculpture juxtaposes traditional Rwandan elements with modern symbols, highlighting the complexities of identity in a rapidly changing world. It depicts a Rwandan man with a tattoo on his face, maintaining the traditional Amasunzu hairstyle. Mugisha explains, “We’re grappling with globalization, and many things can lead us astray. This piece reminds us that, no matter what comes our way, we shouldn’t change our identity. We should uphold our beautiful culture and customs.”
- Ingendo y’Abeza (The Best Footstepper): This piece symbolizes resilience and progress, representing individuals who forge their own paths and inspire others. Mugisha uses metal elements to convey strength and determination, stating, “We should strive to leave the best legacy, even after we’re gone. Our footprint should set an example for others to follow.”
- Self-guardian: This artwork emphasizes personal responsibility and self-care, portraying an individual taking control of their destiny. Mugisha notes, “Everyone can be their own guardian, without relying on others' choices. We can build a strong sense of self-critique so that no one can shake us.”
- Clash of Mind: This thought-provoking work illustrates the internal conflicts faced by society. Through abstract forms, it depicts an old man battling a large spider, symbolizing his wealth of experience and the struggle to maintain a positive outlook amidst various thoughts.
Alongside Mugisha’s sculptures, the exhibition features works by visual artist Jolie Gisubizo Soleil, whose pieces incorporate poetry to add depth to the exhibition. Her artworks explore human emotions and interactions, capturing the beauty and challenges of human connection.
Motherhood: This portrait depicts a mother carrying twins, symbolizing the resilience and strength of mothers who often overlook the pain of childbirth for the sake of their children.
Mfata Nkufate, Mfasha Nkufashe: This piece emphasizes the importance of collaboration in a competitive world, advocating for mutual support and companionship.
Gisubizo also reflects on the gender dynamics in the arts, noting that while women often engage in artistic pursuits when they are younger, family responsibilities can shift their focus to more financially stable activities, leading to a decline in female participation in demanding art forms.
Mugisha Josue’s debut exhibition, “La Corrida,” is a powerful testament to the role of art in social reflection and community engagement. By blending traditional elements with contemporary themes, he invites viewers to confront their struggles and engage with the complexities of modern life. The collaboration with Jolie Gisubizo Soleil further enriches the exhibition, highlighting the diverse perspectives within the Rwandan art scene. As Mugisha continues to develop his craft, his work promises to inspire and provoke thought, making a lasting impact on the local art community and beyond.
