Esther Mahlangu, South African Art Icon, Turns 89
Esther Mahlangu, the legendary South African artist, has made an indelible mark on the world of art by preserving and innovating the traditional Ndebele painting style. Born in 1935 in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, Mahlangu’s work celebrates her Ndebele heritage through bold geometric patterns, a style traditionally passed down among Ndebele women. Starting at just 10 years old, she was taught by her mother and grandmother the intricate and symbolic designs that now form the basis of her iconic work.
Here’s an overview of her remarkable contributions and legacy:
Mahlangu has redefined traditional Ndebele art by applying it to modern mediums such as canvas, ceramics, and even automobiles. She was the first African artist and woman to join BMW’s Art Car Collection in 1991, where she adorned a car with traditional Ndebele patterns. In 2020, she made history again, painting the interior of a Rolls-Royce Phantom named “The Mahlangu” in her honor.
Mahlangu’s art has been exhibited globally in countries like Australia, the United States, Japan, and throughout Europe. Her unique ability to paint freehand without measurements or sketches has captivated audiences and collectors worldwide, earning her work a place in prestigious collections owned by celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Usher, and John Legend. Her honors include three honorary doctorates, France’s Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, and the title of “Living Legend” from South Africa’s Department of Arts and Culture.
In her hometown, Mahlangu has become a cultural ambassador and educator, mentoring young women in the traditional Ndebele art form. Her dedication ensures the continuation of this artistic heritage, making her both a pioneer in global contemporary art and a beloved figure in her community.
At 89, Mahlangu’s career continues to flourish, with her work inspiring new generations and preserving the vibrant legacy of Ndebele culture for years to come.
