Serfor approves National Jaguar Conservation Plan 2022-2031
The National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, approved the National Plan for the Conservation of the Jaguar (Panthera onca) in Peru, period 2022-2031, whose objective is to ensure the survival of this species and their connected habitats, through strategic management measures, with the commitment of the different key actors.
The plan, which contains a diagnosis of the species, constitutes a management document for the authorities and entities linked to the conservation of wild fauna . The jaguar is the third largest feline in the world and plays a fundamental role in the ecosystems where it lives, because it controls the population density of the species that are its prey, which allows an ecological balance.
In addition, being at the top of the food chain controls the presence of other predators, but unfortunately the jaguar population is threatened due to the loss of its habitat, direct killing for the illegal trade of its body parts, the decrease in prey on which this feline feeds and the growing conflict with humans due to the expansion of human populations.

For this reason, specific objectives have been established such as conserving the habitat of the jaguar; and strengthen the governance and institutional framework that guarantees a timely intervention in the conservation of the specimen. Read More…
