Singapore Invests $332 Million to Attract Deep Tech Investors
Singapore is set to allocate SG$440 million (approximately $332.6 million) to enhance its deep tech startup ecosystem, aiming to attract more global venture capital (VC) firms to invest in local startups with international scaling potential. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to position Singapore as a hub for deep tech innovation.
A key component of this initiative is the establishment of a new "one-stop platform," which will include a physical facility designed to unite local and global tech startups. Scheduled to launch in the next quarter, this facility aims to foster collaboration among startups, enterprises, and innovation partners. According to a joint statement from Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) and the Economic Development Board (EDB), the facility will provide resources and programs to help startups establish a presence in Singapore and enhance their business capabilities. It will also facilitate market access and support for global startups looking to integrate into the local ecosystem.
The SG$332.6 million fund is part of the Startup SG Equity program, which was introduced alongside Singapore's SG$28 billion (approximately $21.17 billion) Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025 plan. To date, around SG$3 billion (about $2.27 billion) has been invested in over 330 startups through the Startup SG Equity scheme, with more than SG$2.5 billion (approximately $1.89 billion) coming from private sector investments.
To further support the growth of early to early-growth Stage 3 deep tech startups, the government will increase its co-investment cap from SG$8 million to SG$12 million (approximately $9.07 million) per startup. Eligible startups can access these funds for various early-stage development needs, including technology validation and commercialization.
Singapore anticipates that the additional funding will attract a broader range of prominent global VCs to invest in deep tech startups in the Asian market, particularly those with the potential for international expansion. EnterpriseSG and EDB highlighted that these VCs bring valuable technical expertise, commercial knowledge, and global networks, which are essential for helping startups transition their innovative technologies from the lab to the market. Key focus areas for investment include biotech, quantum computing, and space technology.
Emily Liew, assistant managing director of innovation at EnterpriseSG, emphasized the importance of innovation for Singapore's future. She stated, "We must double down on efforts to grow a strong core of deep tech startups, as well as elevate our startup ecosystem to one that is globally oriented and can attract some of the world's best talents."
Investment in AI Talent Development
In a related effort to bolster its tech ecosystem, Singapore is also investing in talent development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). AI Singapore has launched an online learning platform aimed at equipping aspiring AI engineers with industry-relevant skills in AI and software engineering.
The AIAP Foundation is based on the principles of the AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP) and begins with a "self-directed deep-skilling" phase that combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice. Participants will engage in AI project development, working on real-world AI projects throughout their lifecycle. This includes understanding customer challenges, working with actual data, selecting and training AI models, and deploying them. Participants will receive guidance from AI mentors, project managers, and machine learning operations (MLOps) teams.
The AIAP Foundation aims to address the skills gap in the AI sector by offering a flexible, self-paced course for individuals with programming skills to upskill in AI engineering. The curriculum is designed for those with basic proficiency in Python and covers topics such as exploratory data analysis, building machine learning pipelines, and applying technical skills to real-world AI projects.
Upon completing the Foundation course, participants can apply for the nine-month AIAP program, which offers further deep-skilling training and development work on real-world AI projects. Since its launch, more than 350 participants have graduated from the AIAP program, underscoring Singapore's commitment to fostering a skilled workforce in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
