Soumoud calls for a boycott of the legislative elections
The Soumoud coalition published, Monday, October 10, 2022, a press release in which it announced that it was definitively abandoning the process of the President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed and called for a boycott of the early legislative elections scheduled for December.
Soumoud affirmed, in this sense, his rejection of the new electoral law considering it unconstitutional by his opposition to the provisions of article 51 of the 2022 constitution drawn up by the President of the Republic himself, just like the Electoral code.
The citizens' coalition pointed out that the new electoral law would lead to illegal legislative elections and an illegitimate parliament calling on Tunisian women, young people and members of civil society to boycott the entire process, including the vote.
Soumoud urged national and democratic figures to assume their responsibilities by opposing all abuses that threaten the higher interests of the country, and the living forces of the country to defend their constitutional rights, in particular the right to fair and democratic elections. .
She also called on the components of the political scene to coordinate efforts to organize national actions and peaceful demonstrations to save the democratic transition.
In April, after Kaïs Saïed announced the adoption of the first-past-the-post system in two rounds for the early legislative elections set for December 17, 2022, Soumoud opposed this voting method, calling for the adoption of a voting system two-round majority system based on pairs in the election of members of the legislative assembly.
