Spain may not have new central bank governor by July 18 ECB meet, economy minister says
Spain's Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo indicated on Thursday that Spain may not appoint a new central bank governor in time for the upcoming European Central Bank (ECB) monetary policy meeting on July 18. He stated that if a decision isn't made by then, Deputy Governor Margarita Delgado, who lacks voting rights, would represent Spain at the meeting.
Earlier last month, Cuerpo had announced that a newly appointed governor would attend the July 18 meeting. Currently, the Spanish government is in discussions with the opposition conservative People's Party (PP) regarding the appointments of both a governor and a deputy governor for the Bank of Spain.
These negotiations are part of broader talks involving several key state positions, including roles in the anti-trust watchdog and the stock market supervisor. A recent agreement was reached regarding the governance of the judicial system, but Cuerpo declined to provide specifics on the ongoing discussions or potential candidates.
The previous term of central bank chief Pablo Hernández de Cos ended last month, while Deputy Governor Margarita Delgado's term is scheduled to conclude in September.
