Spain Unleashes 28 GW of Renewables in Latest Permitting Round
In a major milestone for Spain's renewable energy sector, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has granted Administrative Construction Authorisation (AAC) to 283 renewable energy projects, totaling 28GW of capacity. This move paves the way for the construction of these projects, which are expected to generate over 300,000 jobs and require an investment of more than €17 billion.
The projects, which include 43 wind farms with a combined capacity of 2.6GW and 239 photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 24.8GW, will contribute significantly to Spain's goal of increasing its renewable energy capacity. A pumping hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 573MW is also included in the list of approved projects.
The AAC is a crucial step in the development of these projects, and with this approval, the projects can now begin construction immediately. The projects must be completed within three years and will play a key role in helping Spain achieve its renewable energy targets.
Spain's National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) aims to triple the country's solar power capacity to over 76GW and double its wind power capacity to over 62GW by the end of the decade. The plan also targets covering 81% of the country's electricity demand with clean energy by 2030.
The approved projects will not only contribute to Spain's renewable energy goals but also have a significant impact on the country's economy. The construction of these facilities is expected to generate over 300,000 jobs, with a focus on rural areas. The wind sector is expected to create over 41,000 jobs, while the photovoltaic sector is expected to create over 260,000 jobs.
