Spanish Club Appoints Diego Maradona Jr. as New Manager
UD Ibarra, a team competing in Spain’s Third Division, has made headlines by announcing the appointment of Diego Maradona Jr. as their new head coach. This decision follows the dismissal of Francis Díaz, who was let go after the team’s disappointing performance, including a recent 3-1 defeat against San Fernando.
In an official announcement, UD Ibarra expressed their enthusiasm: "UD Ibarra is pleased to introduce Diego Armando Maradona Jr., who will be part of the first team coaching staff." This strategic shift aims to enhance the squad’s performance, as they currently find themselves just one point above the relegation zone to Regional Preferente.
Maradona Jr. shared the news of his appointment on his personal social media account, stating simply: "With everything." His arrival comes at a critical time for the club, which is looking to improve its standing in the league.
Francis Díaz, who previously managed Real Betis Féminas and had a successful stint at UD Granadilla Tenerife, struggled to achieve the desired results during his time at Ibarra. Over seven matches, Díaz secured only two wins and one draw, leaving the team in fourteenth place in the Group XII standings of Tercera RFEF.
At 38 years old, Diego Maradona Jr. steps into this role with the mission of turning around the club's fortunes. This marks a significant opportunity in his coaching career, as it is his first professional experience outside of Italy. Prior to this, he managed Napoli United and lower league teams such as Pompei and Montecalcio in Italy's fifth tier.
His contract with UD Ibarra extends until the end of the season, and he is expected to arrive in Tenerife by mid-week to begin preparations for the upcoming match against Arucas this Saturday. This opening match will be crucial in demonstrating his ability to guide the team away from the relegation zone and toward a more favorable position in the standings.
Diego Maradona Jr., the son of the legendary Diego Armando Maradona and Cristiana Sinagra, began his coaching journey at Napoli United in July 2021. His tenure there lasted until March 2023, after which he briefly managed Pompei and Montecalcio in the Eccellenza amateur league in Italy.
The departure of Francis Díaz was accompanied by an official statement from the club, thanking him for "his dedication and professionalism." With Maradona Jr. now at the helm, expectations are high as he aims to meet the club’s demands and restore its competitive edge in the league.
