Spolu Coalition Parties Sign Agreement for Joint List in 2025 General Election
The leaders of the three parties in the governing Spolu coalition—Prime Minister Petr Fiala of the Civic Democrats (ODS), Marek Vyborny of the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), and Marketa Pekarova Adamova of TOP 09—have officially signed a memorandum to run together in the upcoming 2025 Czech parliamentary elections. This coalition, which translates to "Together," aims to secure victory and establish a centre-right government.
Before signing the agreement, Fiala emphasized the coalition's commitment to winning the elections, framing the upcoming contest as a critical battle between democratic parties and populist movements. The coalition plans to highlight this distinction in its campaign strategy.
The Spolu coalition intends to unveil its program in February, after which it will begin compiling candidate lists. The memorandum outlines a commitment to complete reforms across various sectors, including the economy, health, social services, and defense. Additionally, the coalition aims to modernize education, enhance the Czech Republic's role in NATO, and ensure a decent standard of living for its citizens.
Fiala expressed concern over the potential rise of "left, populist, and radical forces," which he described as the greatest threat to the Czech Republic since the fall of communism in 1989. He asserted that the current government has successfully navigated numerous crises and positioned the country for growth.
In the previous parliamentary elections held in October 2021, Spolu narrowly defeated the ANO party by just 0.67 percentage points, marking the closest margin in Czech parliamentary history. Following that victory, they formed a governing coalition with the Mayors and Independents (STAN) and the Pirates, although the latter exited the government a month ago.
Pekarova Adamova highlighted the coalition's dedication to the values established during the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic, coinciding with a national holiday. She called for active citizen engagement and responsible governance, asserting that the current administration is focused on long-term solutions rather than short-term gains.
Vyborny reiterated the coalition's readiness to fulfill its promises and continue the program it has been implementing. He noted that Spolu has demonstrated the ability of politicians to collaborate effectively, a quality that resonates with voters.
Despite the coalition's efforts, current opinion polls indicate a significant lead for the opposition ANO party. A recent election model by Kantar CZ suggests that ANO would secure 35.5% of the vote, while ODS would follow with 14.5%. If ODS, KDU-CSL, and TOP 09 were to run together again, ANO's support could rise to 36.5%, with Spolu projected to receive around 20% of the vote.
