Thailand Head Coach Leaves Pitch After Disagreement with Billionaire Madame Pang
In a surprising turn of events following Thailand's 1-0 victory over Malaysia in the 2024 ASEAN Cup, head coach Masatada Ishii walked straight into the locker room after a disagreement with Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Nualphan Lamsam, commonly known as Madame Pang. The incident has sparked considerable discussion among fans and media alike.
After the match, while the players took a lap around Thammasat Stadium to thank their supporters, Ishii expressed his desire for a more subdued celebration. He instructed the team to limit their post-match festivities, emphasizing the importance of rest ahead of their upcoming away match against Singapore in just three days. Ishii suggested that the players simply stand in the center of the pitch to acknowledge the fans, rather than completing a full lap around the stadium.
However, Madame Pang was reportedly unaware of Ishii's intentions, leading to a misunderstanding. Following a brief conversation with Ishii’s interpreter, she continued to walk with the players, while Ishii headed directly to the tunnel, leaving players and fans surprised by his abrupt departure.
According to reports from Thairath, Ishii chose not to voice his concerns publicly to avoid further misunderstandings. The situation was characterized as a difference of opinion, with both parties acting in what they believed was best for the team.
The incident quickly became a trending topic in Thai media, igniting debates among fans. Many supported Madame Pang's commitment to honoring the fans, viewing it as an essential gesture of respect. Conversely, others defended Ishii, arguing that as head coach, he should have full authority over team matters without external interference.
In response to the situation, Madame Pang denied any conflict with Ishii, emphasizing the importance of fans to the team and referring to them as the "12th player." She highlighted the contributions of major fan clubs, such as CheerThai Power, Thailand Hardcore, and Ultras Thailand, in fostering a strong connection between the team and its supporters.
"Over my 16 years of working in football, respecting the fans has always been the right thing to do," Madame Pang stated on her Facebook page. "I believe in trust, honor, and mutual respect."
On Sunday morning, before the team departed for Singapore, Ishii addressed the situation, admitting his frustration and explaining his actions. He acknowledged that he had not spoken directly to Madame Pang but had sent her a text to apologize. He also expressed regret to the fans for his behavior.
"I wanted the players to be fully rested, as it’s crucial for the team’s success. However, I realize I need to communicate more effectively with Madame Pang," Ishii said, recognizing the need for better communication moving forward.
As it stands, Thailand is leading Group A in the 2024 ASEAN Cup, having secured victories over Timor-Leste (10-0) and Malaysia (1-0). They are currently tied on six points with Singapore and will face this opponent in an away match on Tuesday.
Madame Pang, 57, is a prominent businesswoman and politician, hailing from one of Thailand's wealthiest families. She previously led the national football team before becoming FAT president earlier this year, and her commitment to the sport and its fans remains a focal point of her leadership.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between team management and fan engagement, as both Ishii and Madame Pang navigate their roles in the pursuit of success for Thai football.
