The Cruel Sea release first album in 23 years
The Cruel Sea, the legendary Australian band, has announced the release of their first album in 23 years, titled Straight Into The Sun. This marks the group’s first studio project since 2001’s Where’s The Smoke.
The album’s title track, "Straight Into The Sun," has already been unveiled, offering a taste of their familiar sound, blending soul and warm rhythms with the band’s signature style. For longtime fans, the track is a nostalgic return to form, while for new listeners, it serves as an inviting entry into their discography.
The idea for a new album began in 2023 when the band reunited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their iconic 1993 release The Honeymoon Is Over. Their subsequent tour of sold-out shows across Australia ignited the creative spark that led to recording sessions, ultimately producing the 10 tracks featured on Straight Into The Sun.
In an interview with Double J’s Karen Leng, frontman Tex Perkins described the new material as reminiscent of their earlier works, drawing influence from surf-instrumental vibes and focusing more on guitar-driven instrumentals, rather than the grungy sounds of their later albums like Better Get A Lawyer. Perkins emphasized that the new album has a clear thematic thread but balances "light and shade," leaning more into the ballad-driven side of The Cruel Sea, rather than their harder-rocking or funkier material.
The Cruel Sea initially released their first two albums Down Below (1989) and This Is Not The Way Home (1991) before recruiting Tex Perkins, formerly their lighting technician and Beasts of Bourbon singer, as lead vocalist. His addition propelled the band to mainstream success and cemented their place in the Australian music scene.
